Context
The Ljubljana Urban Planning Institute (LUZ) is the oldest and most important institute of its kind in Slovenia and the broader ex-Yugoslavian region. It is responsible for the most complex projects and solutions in the areas of urban and spatial planning, traffic infrastructure, public transport, architecture, geodesy, and landscape architecture, including the general urban city plan of Ljubljana, completed in the sixties.

Complex Challenge
We were invited to design a comprehensive monograph, marking its 60th anniversary. The project posed a substantial organizational, editorial, and technical challenge that spanned over a period of three years. The majority of the visual material, such as plans, drawings, and photographs (more than 1,500 items in total), had to be newly prepared specifically for this occasion, as the material from the archive was not suitable for use in the monograph.

Solution
The monograph is divided into three thematically focused 20-year period sections: 1960-1980: General Urban Plan of Ljubljana, 1980-2000: The New Urban Plan, and 2000-2020: Municipal Spatial Plan. A general overview of the projects is accompanied by memories of employees, printed on transparent tracing paper and randomly scattered throughout the monograph. This way, we wanted to emphasize that LUZ is not only about its projects but more importantly about its people.

The monograph is complemented by over 25 custom-made infographics that further illuminate larger, more complex, and more prominent projects. The publication draws its visual inspiration from the style of Slovenian and ex-Yugoslav modernism of the sixties, the same era in which LUZ was established. The most notable visual element is the use of green, Ljubljana's distinctive color, but in this instance interpreted with neon green, lending a more contemporary feel to the publication.
